DIY IKEA Billy Hamster Cage

Supplies

You can purchase the Billy extention from the IKEA website or in store. The extension is made for the Billy bookcase and can be found in the shelving and bookshelf section. There are two sizes so make sure you buy the larger one, they come in a few different colours.

The glass shelf can also be purchased on the IKEA website or in store. It can be found in the shelving section. There are two versions of this shelf make sure you buy the bigger size.

Aquarium silicone can be bought in hardware stores, it costs bewteen €3 - €5 for a large bottle. It must say "fish safe" or "safe for use in fish aquariums" on the bottle to ensure that it can safly be used in a pets cage.

For the lid you will need mesh, nails and a few lenghts of wood.

Building The Cage

To build the Billy extension follow the instrctions that came with it. Lay the billy on its back so that the exposed chipboard edge is facing forward.

Prop the glass shelf inside the front of the extension, I used paint cans to hold it in place but use whatever works for you. There will be a slight gap between the edge of the glass and side of the wood but this can be filled in with the silicone. Follow the instrctions on the silicone and appy it to the three edges of glass that are in contact with the wood. After 10 minutes use a damp cloth to smooth out the silicone. Let it cure for 48 hours before putting anything in the cage.

Your lid measurements may be slightly different depeing on the width of the wood you use.

Measure the pieces against the cage to make sure the lid covers the top.

Finished!
